Relax and Let Robots Do Your Work

According to a recent report by Pew, most Americans still believe that by 2065, most human jobs will be automated. With the collaboration between Chrysler and Google, the production of autonomous passenger vehicles is likely to begin. In addition, tech firms such as Otto have positioned themselves to completely change the commercial transport industry. All this has popularized the talk on technological unemployment. Many commercial drivers have begun questioning the possibility of retaining their jobs in the near future if this technology is implemented.

Although the idea of a world full of autonomous workers is new to most people, the possible digital disruption is not. People have previously succeeded in overcoming technological unemployment and almost all the key players have been affected in one way or another. However, when industries are affected, in most cases, the key players will make big shifts making users happier. Either way, life has to continue. This could be referred as being optimistic in everything and even if robots succeed in taking people’s jobs, they will always find ways to come up with new ones.

Discussions making rounds seek to find out whether the speculated technological unemployment will be widespread or not. Others still wonder why all these should happen. They are for the idea that future automated labor equipments should provide more opportunities rather than taking them away. Currently, the economy is having difficulties filling positions. Additionally, income inequalities are now at astonishing heights.

Many people view incredible technology as a tool that will help the world to achieve universal equality. In most cases, it has succeeded in doing this. For instance, the block-chain technology can act as an equalizer. People who keenly follow the technology industry have undoubtedly heard that, the block-chain technology can decentralize and disrupt almost everything from social networks to banking institutions.

Without overanalyzing it, block-chain is the technology behind the bitcoin currency. Since it is not printed by governments or banks, no one can claim to own it. This means that, there is no any centralized authority that can control it. If applied to the future autonomous tech, centralization would mean that someone would own one of the world’s sources of labor. This would result to controlling people who are entitled to reap and benefit from the fruits of the labor as well as those who don’t.

This would go a great way in solving the inequality menace. If automated machines provide people with numerous resources such as shelter and food, currency will no longer remain important in the world. This is because the labor resources from robot workers are currency by their own. The idea that objects should have owners will give rise to centralization and the desire to make autonomous labor sources patent. The ideas of ownership, work and value are strongly tied in the world today. The decentralization of technology so that it can provide resources to the world unlimitedly and indiscriminately might sound like an achievable dream. However, if correctly implemented, it can serve as the perfect equalizer at the end of the day. The world societies would stop measuring the value of people using their economic contributions.

Estimates reveal that, about 10 million jobs opportunities will be lost the moment driverless technology is implemented. This is a great challenge since all these people will suffer from lack of a source of livelihood. Similarly, if all these jobs were lost, but handed to autonomous robots that are decentralized, people would finally achieve equality. People who are already benefiting from the centralized system would fight to ensure that the system remains the same so that they can continue controlling things.

The best thing about economic identities is the fact that they die. There is an article done by the Guardian back in 2014 about how Americans use job uncertainties to redefine themselves. However, technology has successfully created a more uncertain economy. According to Evans, this is job atomization and changes the narrative that every adult is required to have a job where they can work full time. He defines this as the major problem that is blocking the future of automated labor.

Some studies have revealed that, not all ants are active in a colony. They are ant workers reserved for big tasks. This does not necessarily mean that the working population is at liberty to join the idle ants while artificial ants do all the work. Although this analogy cannot perfectly fit on humans, there is a degree of similarity between the two.

The first hurdle is the debate covering decentralization, centralization and people’s individual economic identities. If decentralization can provide resources to people equally, how long can it continue doing the same if lack of resources brought about by overpopulation kicks in? People are not certain about some of the potential downsides that might come with abandoning labor values as well as the discriminatory resource attribution.

Conclusion

If people were suddenly given everything they ever desired, they would probably have no wish to work harder and raise themselves above other people. No one knows how things would turn out if the world embraced technological unemployment fully.
